Description
All the flavors of classic cabbage rolls without the rolling. This cabbage roll casserole is hearty, simple, and perfect for freezing or feeding a crowd.
Ingredients
1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
1 lb ground beef
1 cup cooked white rice
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13″ baking dish.
Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until translucent.
Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
Stir in tomato sauce, broth, and dried herbs. Simmer 5 minutes.
Add cooked rice, mix well, and season to taste.
Layer chopped cabbage and beef mixture in the dish. Repeat layers.
Cover with foil and bake 45–55 minutes until cabbage is tender.
Uncover and broil for 5 minutes if a browned top is desired.
Notes
Optional: Pre-soften cabbage by steaming for a few minutes before layering.
Add shredded cheese on top during last 10 minutes of baking for a melty finish.
